The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has announced a crackdown on beggars in Abuja, citing their negative impact on the city’s appearance and potential security risks.
He made this statement on Tuesday during the official launch of the access road construction from Nnamdi Azikiwe Expressway by N16 to the Judges’ Quarters in Katampe District, Abuja.
The minister explained that the action was necessary due to concerns that Abuja was becoming overrun by beggars.
“Let me make it clear: we have launched a crackdown on beggars because Abuja is becoming a beggars’ city.
“If you have a sister or brother who is begging on the streets, take action, because starting next week, we will remove them from the city.
“It’s shameful that visitors to Abuja are greeted first by beggars on the roads,” he stated.
Wike added that many of these so-called beggars might actually be criminals posing as beggars.
“We cannot allow that to happen.
“I am issuing a public order effective until Sunday. Starting Monday, we will begin to remove them. It’s truly embarrassing.
“We are combating insecurity, and individuals begging on the streets could be informants,” Wike warned.
He explained that the initiative aims to enhance security, allowing residents to feel safe and sleep peacefully.
He acknowledged that some individuals might not agree with the decision, stating, “Sometimes, we cannot prioritize your happiness.
“What matters is that we fulfill our responsibilities. If you’re unhappy, there’s little we can do, but the welfare of the people is what’s essential.” (NAN)
