Governor Seyi Makinde officially handed over the Staff of Office to the newly appointed Alaafin of Oyo, Abimbola Owoade.
The ceremony took place at the governor’s office in Agodi, Ibadan, on Monday.
Earlier reports from a national television had stated that Owoade was set to receive his appointment letter and staff of office on the same day.
A senior government official had informed a national television, saying, “Prince Owoade is in town. He will be presented with his appointment letter from the state government on Monday to begin his duties as Alaafin.”
Makinde gave his approval for Owoade’s appointment, as revealed in a statement issued on Friday by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Dotun Oyelade.
Owoade’s selection as the 46th Alaafin-elect attracted a distinguished gathering of dignitaries, traditional rulers, religious figures, government representatives, and celebratory Oyo citizens.
The significant event began with prayers from Islamic, Christian, and traditional leaders, followed by lively music and cultural displays, marking a pivotal moment in Oyo’s history.
During the presentation of the office insignia, Makinde praised the Alaafin-elect, highlighting his role as a leader destined to uphold and enhance the cultural and historical legacy of the Oyo Kingdom.
Referring to the Alaafin as more than just a traditional ruler, but as a guardian of a rich heritage, the governor expressed confidence that the new monarch would lead with wisdom, integrity, and a strong commitment to fostering unity in the Oyo Kingdom.
“We are confident that Oba Owoade will lead with wisdom, integrity, and a deep dedication to promoting unity,” Makinde stated.
In his acceptance speech, Owoade pledged to focus on advancing the kingdom and improving the lives of its people.
“I will dedicate myself to the growth and prosperity of the Oyo Kingdom, ensuring that the traditions and values that have sustained us for generations remain intact,” he vowed.
Owoade’s ascension follows the death of the late Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi III in April 2022, who had ruled the Oyo Kingdom for an exceptional fifty years.
The new monarch’s reign is expected to bring a fresh era focused on preserving culture, empowering youth, and driving economic development for the kingdom.
