Peter Obi, the Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate in the 2023 election, has urged the federal government to organize a public hearing before proceeding with the proposed tax reform bills.
In a statement issued on Monday, Obi highlighted the importance of tax reform, stressing that it is a vital matter that requires transparency and active public participation.
“Such reforms, however, must undergo thorough and well-informed public discussion.
A public hearing on tax reform is crucial, providing an opportunity for Nigerians from all backgrounds to participate actively,” he stated.
The former Anambra State governor emphasized that holding a public hearing would promote trust and inclusivity, ensuring that policies are shaped by the needs and viewpoints of all citizens.
“Decisions of this significance demand thorough deliberation and thoughtful consideration, they should not be hastily made,” he said. “Public hearings are essential to gather diverse perspectives and input, allowing public policy to reflect the widest range of opinions.”
Obi also highlighted the need to balance the government’s revenue objectives with the wider effects of tax reforms.
He warned against prioritizing fiscal gains at the expense of the country’s overall well-being.
“We must consider the broader impact on the nation as a whole and ensure the sustainability of all its regions,” he stated.
“Additionally, the government must educate the public and gain their support for any policy changes. Trust and legitimacy are essential for effective governance, and without them, even well-intentioned reforms may not succeed.”
Obi urged the government to focus on transparency, open discussion, and public involvement in its decision-making, stressing that these actions are crucial for promoting a participatory democracy.
“This is how we create a genuinely participatory democracy,” he concluded.
