Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has stated that the situation is difficult, with Nigerians presently facing hunger and frustration.
Makinde made this statement on Wednesday during the groundbreaking ceremony for the upgrade of Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport in Alakia, Ibadan, to meet international standards.
While speaking to the crowd, the governor assured that his administration would avoid implementing policies that would worsen the current hardships citizens are experiencing.
Makinde confirmed that his administration has provided appropriate compensation to landowners in Ajia who lost their properties due to the construction of the new Air Force Base in the area.
He stated, “During the Executive Council Meeting yesterday, we made a crucial decision. We understand that times are tough, and Nigerians are frustrated and struggling. However, I trust the situation won’t escalate. Here in Oyo State, we have control over the actions we can take.”
“I see that the House has approved the Presumptive Tax Bill. It originated from us because, to grow the economy, we need to raise funds. I will sign it into law, but we won’t enforce it for the time being.”
“I would like to extend a special thanks to the committee members who worked on the project over the past six weeks, making it possible for us to hold the official groundbreaking ceremony today.
“Some may believe that upgrading the airport at this time isn’t a good idea, but the decision to elevate it to international standards is grounded in data and reasoning. This project will be completed within the next twelve months, and I am committed to pushing the boundaries to make it happen.
“This airport will link Oyo State to the global market, enhancing business operations and attracting investments in agribusiness, manufacturing, and technology. It will also establish Ibadan as a genuine regional business hub.”
He stated that it is a strategic investment comprising two phases, which will result in the enhancement of the airport, including the runway, airfield lighting, terminal, and other essential facilities.
