The former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has alleged that his impeachment was carried out with a counterfeit mace.
A few weeks prior, members of the Lagos State House of Assembly removed Obasa from office while he was away in the United States.
After his impeachment, Mojisola Meranda was appointed as the new Speaker of the Assembly.
However, upon returning to Nigeria over the weekend, Obasa challenged the validity of his removal, calling it null and void.
Speaking to his supporters from Agege, Alimosho, and Kosofe local government areas at Ikeja GRA, Obasa argued that his impeachment did not follow constitutional procedures.
He stated: “Let me ask you this: early that morning, policemen, led by the Commissioner of Police, stormed the House of Assembly. What was his role there? Why was he involved in Assembly matters?
“Yes, I acknowledge what happened, but let us reflect. When Pelumi, my brother whom I deeply respect and fondly call Brother Waheed, was removed, he was present in the House, and no police intervention occurred. His removal took place on the House floor, without breaking into the chamber or using a fake mace.”
“When Tejuoso, my dear sister and close friend, was removed as Deputy Speaker, the process took place openly on the House floor. There was no involvement of the police; everything was conducted peacefully.
As for the members who were suspended, it was a decision made by the majority of the House during a session on the floor.”
