A man, Muktar Rabiu, who is suspected of cable theft, was electrocuted while attempting to steal high-voltage cables in the Federal Capital Territory.
The incident took place on November 28, 2024, just a few weeks after Rabiu had been caught and sentenced for a similar offense. The information was disclosed by the FCT Police Command Spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, on Monday.
Adeh explained that Rabiu had been arrested on November 21, 2024, during a routine patrol along Christ the King Road in Gwagwalada.
She stated that he was found in possession of high-voltage cables, which were suspected to have been stolen from the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company.
She also mentioned that after being brought before the court, Rabiu was sentenced to community service, along with receiving 42 lashes as part of his punishment.
Adeh stated that the punishment did not discourage Rabiu from continuing his criminal behavior.
“This time, however, fate took its course. On November 28, 2024, just weeks after completing his community service, Rabiu was severely electrocuted while attempting to dismantle electrical equipment, leaving him critically injured. He is currently receiving medical treatment in a hospital,” Adeh added.
She mentioned that once he recovers, he will face charges.
Adeh also issued a warning to criminals against vandalizing public infrastructure.
She stated, “The FCT command remains steadfast in its commitment to protecting critical infrastructure and has issued a strong warning against vandalism and theft of public utilities. These acts not only put lives at risk but also disrupt vital services that communities depend on.”
“Given these events, the police urge citizens to stay alert and report any suspicious activities to the nearest station or via the Command’s emergency lines. Community involvement is crucial in combating vandalism and ensuring a safer environment for everyone.”
