Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State has begun distributing Federal Government palliatives to residents impacted by the recent flooding that devastated parts of the state.
On Sunday and Monday, the governor visited areas like Gamboru Ngala to assess the extensive damage caused by the floods.
According to a statement from Borno Community Watch on Monday, the visit was aimed at delivering essential relief materials to support the affected residents.
The floods, which isolated the impacted communities for four months, caused substantial damage to homes, infrastructure, and farmland.
The Governor extended his heartfelt sympathy to the affected residents, recognizing the significant difficulties they have endured.
The statement noted that, in addition to the flooding, the destruction of farmlands by elephants further exacerbated the residents’ struggles, leaving many families fighting to maintain their livelihoods.
On the second day of his visit, Governor Zulum supervised the distribution of 100 packs of various grains, including maize, millet, and sorghum, which were provided by the Federal Government.
The relief materials were intended to alleviate the urgent food shortages in Gamboru Ngala.
The governor praised the Federal Government, led by President Bola Tinubu, for its intervention and support.
He also thanked agencies like the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and the National Emergency Management Agency for their timely assistance.
The Governor remarked, “While this immediate humanitarian aid is crucial, it is not a long-term solution. We must focus on empowering our people to regain their self-sufficiency and rebuild their livelihoods. That is why we are prioritizing sustainable solutions, such as irrigation farming, to ensure agricultural activities throughout the year.”
To meet the long-term needs of flood-affected communities, the state government has started implementing irrigation projects in areas like Ngala. This initiative aims to restore food security and enhance economic resilience, helping residents recover from the flood’s devastating impact.
Zulum reassured the people of Gamboru Ngala that his administration is fully committed to their recovery and well-being.
He stressed that with joint efforts from both the state and federal governments, along with support from essential agencies, the community would overcome its challenges and emerge stronger than before.
